Mission

To advance the understanding and appreciation of the German language and culture through education, games, songs, art projects and cultural celebrations.

About GSSOP

Operated by the German American Society of Portland, GSSOP has been successfully teaching students of all ages since 1964 through creative and interactive methods of instruction. The generous sponsorship of GASP allows for classes to be held at the society’s historic Weinhard Building at 7901 SE Division Street.

Children and adults are grouped together with students of similar ages and abilities, and are instructed in an immersion environment through a variety of activities.

In addition to language classes, children and families come together to celebrate cultural events such as Laternenfest, Nikolaustag, Weihnachten, Fasching, and Maifest. Monthly Jugendabende sessions bring Saturday School teens together with students and teachers from local high school German classes as part of our community outreach program for evenings of learning through games, German films, dancing, and conversation.
